Well, we've all had a go at Arkham Horror and it's been quite fun, and I have no regret in purchasing it.

So let this be the thread in which we discuss the game and keep track of game results, starting from the first officially scored game played earlier today.

Game #1
Players: Sage, Lortarg, Nikiwu, Emily.
Ancient One: Shub-Niggurath
Game Result: Victory by Gate Sealing (6 Elder seals on the game board)
End Score: 9

Recap: We were insanely lucky to gain a large number of clue tokens, and an elder seal card at the start which allowed us to seal the first three gates very quickly. I guess this is counterbalanced by us drawing Shub-Niggurath which made the monsters incredibly tough. (Kinda hard to win when you need 4 successes with 3 dice!) But we won in the end, and it was quite fun.

I thought the score was 9?

This is pretty cool. But you'd have to make it yourself

I now have all the Card only expansions.

So, I've now got:
  • Arkham Horror
  • Dunwich Horror (Board)
  • Curse of the Dark Pharaoh (Card)
  • The King in Yellow (Card)
  • Black Goat of the Woods (Card)

Kingsport and Innsmouth Horror will be in the later months. The card expansions and Junta have blown my board game budget to bits.

Looking forward to playing with Dunwich.
What do the other card expansions have? Does one of them come with the personal stories (or whatever they're called, quests for each character I think they are)

Personal stores are part of the Innsmouth Horror expansion, which is the next one I plan to get.

The first expansion, the King in Yellow contains alot of cards which alter the rules of the game permanently if they are drawn (Conditions have to be met first), like increasing the number of clue tokens needing to seal a gate. This set also introduces heralds, which create their own set of unique effects on the game world.

The second set introduces difficulty cards which adjust the rules, either making the game easier or harder depending on what card we want in play. It also introduces corruption cards which to bad things to certain investigators.

I can see why FFG recommend you only play with a couple of expansions, as if you combined these two expansions with CotDP and Dunwich Horror, the difficulty can become insane.

I was reading some of the cards last night, and the difficulty is defiantly increased significantly. The new items are pretty awesome, but one card is pretty fucking broken.

It's essentially, pay X monster tokens, and the ancient one is awakened with X doom tokens removed. So, if you play your cards right, you can fight the ancient one early on with only a couple of tokens and you're characters are at their strongest.

Been reading a Geeklist of mistakes made in games and one that came up twice in the list is from Arkham.
Apparently when you fail a sneak rule you take damage from the monster straight away. You might want to check the rules for that one.

So when are we planning the arkham horror weekend?

--------------------
When Stephen Hawking guest starred on the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Descent", he was taken on a guided tour of the set. Pausing in front of the warp core set piece, he remarked, "I'm working on that"

I'm reminded of a D&D discussion on another forum, during which we questioned the number of level 0 children it would take to kill a level 20 fighter, given the scenario that the fighter is on the Plane of Infinite Homicidal Children. I believe the agreed upon total was just over 6 billion (fewer if they died in such a manner that the fighter would be covered in a pile of corpses that eventually suffocates him, I believe the number for this scenario was decided to be a mere 10000), before the discussion degraded into arguments about how the fighter should be best built to specifically survive as long as possible. The ability to sleep 8 hours per day, while still being constantly attacked by children, was involved.
