I'm currently working on setting up the anime page at the website. Not being a big anime fan myself, I have no idea on all the different types of main anime genres out there, and I know there's alot. So, I need your help in compiling a list of genre that will be stored in a seperate database table for easy integration to the anime page setup. Here's the list sofar:

action
adventure
comedy
drama
fantasy
hentai
horror
magic
mystery
romance
science fiction
sport
supernatural
thriller

Are you planning on allowing multiple genres per series?
Full metal panic could be listed as any combination of the following Mecha, action, comedy, romance, military, shounen, Drama, Science Fiction and probably a few others.

I'll see what I can do to find an expanded list.

This is how ANN is proposing to update their genre list. Its probably not a complete sub-genre/theme list, but it looks pretty good.
Their idea of having the genre, and then free form themes is a good idea, as long as its all spelled correctly, and consistently.

It would be worth your time reading through the 3 pages of replys. Its interesting some of the things they've come up with, all the posts are relevant, and a couple of things that have been covered aren't in the first post.

Interesting idea on the genre list, and one that I could implement quite easily.. I'm not sure if I should copy the list, or make one up myself.. Might actually bring my genre list to anime tonight and see if we can make up a list subsections at the top of our heads.

I've updated the first post with updated/new genre..

I've just completed the anime system setup for the website. I got the genre setup working nicely with the anime database as well. I have rigourously tested it. Everything seems to be working fine.

Here's a sneak peak at the main anime page for the newly designed admin section of the dargh website. This is not online yet. I used the Anime News Network suggested genre setup as the basis for testing the pages.

This will probably be close to the final design. I will be adding a genre edit feature as well..

Looking good.
The one thing that probably needs updating is the sub-genres/themes listed there aren't all sub-genres. The ones listed next to each genre on the ANN forum were descriptions for the genre. Some would work as sub-genres, but a lot of them don't.
E.g. Funny, isn't a sub-genre of Comedy. Its a short description of what comedy is.

Sub-genres for comedy could be Slapstick, Black humour, Grossout, Romantic, Crazy/Silly/Screwball, Toilet humour etc
They describe the type of comedy in the series.

I'm not sure if you just put them in there as placeholders/test data or as actual data, so the above may be irrelevant.

One question about assigning genres. Do you add a genre to a series, and then assign one or more themes to it, or do all the themes get applied to it?

The way that I designed it is that you can only add individual subgenre's to the anime information.. So for example with the action main genre, an anime might have "chases" and "explosion" subgenres in the anime info (two different table entries), it doesn't have to have "fighting" or "gunplay" in it..

I think that's what you're talking about.. if not, then I'm confused.

And I'm just testing the page with random data from that ANN page. So disregard what you see in the screenshot.

That sounds good then.

So with my comedy example, you could add comedy to an anime, and then add the sub-genres slapstick, romance and toilet humour. And leave the rest off.

I don't think we really need a Hentai genre as we really don't have any in the club except for the inclusion of Kite and Mezo but i wouldn't call them Hentai as the story is not focused on Sex it just has extrema sexual scenes in it, even the director stated that he never intended to really have the scenes in it but he wanted to show the extrema abuse that sawa took. It's really up for discussion, the other thing is i don't think we really want to promote Hentai publicly as it is technically illegal in Victoria and as Hentai in many peoples views is considered child pornography.

But it isn't a library list.. it's an anime page.

and yes dean, you're correct with your example..

Ok maybe i am missing the point of this then? If we are not going to have the library list in the anime page then what is the point of the page and this entire listing anime into genres? I can see the point of having information about different genres, but if we are not going to have the library list on there i don't really see the point. The other thing is what are we sorting into genres if not the library list?

At the moment the anime page will feature anime from the library list that dean have forwarded to me.. In the future it will be expanded with more anime that are not in the library..

and you will also be able to see what anime are in the library and what are not.. even bringing up a list of those that are in, and those that are not.. There will be alot of sorting options, which should please dean biggrin.gif

I will definately bring the genre list to the dargh gaming session tonight so we can come up with a proper subgenre/theme list..

Finally got something working online.. Only a select few has access at the moment..

http://www.dargh.com/genre_list.php

I really want this genre list to grow, especially now that I'm starting to compile the anime database.. Seeing as I'm not a big anime watcher, I'm probably the worse person to try and create a genre list. So, I would appreciate it if you guys start fiddling around with the list and make it perfect..

Just an explanation on how the system works for those that are confused.. Any anime can have an infinite amount of different genre type associated with it.. An Anime can not be associated by just the main genre type (e.g. action), it must have a subgenre associated with it also (e.g. action(guns)). There is no limitation on the amount of subgenres from the same main genre type an anime can have, while also having subgenres from other main genre types as well.

For example, One Piece could have the following:

action(guns)
action(fighting)
action(tournament/competition)
action(martial arts)
adventure(fighting)
comedy(slapstick)
comedy(crazy/silly/screwball)
...
and so on.

The page is designed to function dynamically, which is how I'm planning to do alot of things at the website (web 2.0).. This is pretty much the first real test to see how things go.. If you guys have any problems with anything at the page, let me know..
