Full Version: Funny ideas for the new site

This is the last time I'll make express this idea.

Has anyone concidered expanding some of the classes in phpBB to support the Library system we had in the old site. Storage is there for us:-
[list]* Create a board called 'Library'
* Create a thread for each item in the library
* The first post discribes the item
* Member make later posts to give their reviews[list]
To keep control, the board could be locked to make sure only Admin can create new threads.

The next challenge is creating the discription and review posts. I figured through using existing classes in phpBB, you could create the additional post types needed to opertate the library.

What does everyone else have to say about that? If people have had enough of this old idea, I'll stop presenting it.

I know some one is working on integrating the library into the new site; the forum and the site are going to be separate so if one goes down the other one is still up.

I like the idea of running the library like that... the only problems is when some either trolls/floods it and the reviews get bogged down in petty arguements and the like...

Thats why you make that part heavily moderated. 1 post per person, and it must be about the anime.

If I ever find free time, I can try to see if I can add the new features in.

Any objections? Just so as you know, I don't see myself as having free time any day soon.

Go ahead, do what you want to do. As I'm no longer the web manager here, I cannot stop you from doing what your doing. However, I won't be supporting the idea, as I think it's a stupid way of doing it. What happens if we decide to expand it and all, by adding a borrowing/reserve system? And what about other stuff like screenshots, and detailed info?

What I have proposed, and what I was planning to do, that Mr Head Sage will do now (whenever he does it), is to create a seperate db for the new website that holds the news, events, and anime lists (anime, not library!). I was going to create a seperate login function for the admins to be able to add stuff to these db. I haven't really thought about how I was going to allow members to post reviews and stuff. Maybe try and incorporate the member db from this forum into the other db? Might need to muck around with it on my webserver (as I *still* haven't got any access to the dargh server).

Like I said, I'm not gonna stop you from doing it, and if people support your views, then by all means do it.. As Igor mentioned, we're trying to make the forum seperate from the mainsite, so if it crashes, the mainsite will still be up, thus eliminating the problems we had at the other site..

I think I'm babbling on too much now...

That is one of the challenges that I intend to look at. I'm going to see if the code can be made to work with multiple databases. If I can find out where database access are being made, all that needs to be is to find to have multiple database connections hiding behind the access point.

Since you are no longer web manager that isn't really what you should be saying. You should say to ask Sage.

Miz, you could get a copy of phpBB and play around with it yourself on your own machine.

I actually have and even saw this coming. At first glance I found the code too complex but with my skill set now, I'm sure I can handle it. The only matter that now remains is finding time.

I had a chat to Sage today, the reason why any work hasten been done on the site/forum is because he has been capped at 64k for the last week or so because he exceeded his down limit, the cap gets lifted tonight so we should have new color styles installed by next week and hopefully a primary site up running I hope.
